Bobby Reid-actions: VFTN reacts to the news.

Firstly, can we just appreciate that Cardiff City included a GIF in their announcement tweet. And then tagged Bristol City. The Wurzels. Rustled.

Bobby Reid makes a great deal of sense. It’s definitely one plucked from the probable pile. Coming off the back of the season of his life, he was heading out of contract this summer before Bristol City activated an extra year in order to cash in. Similar to what happened with Danny Ward at Rotherham last summer. It’s an exciting one, especially the whole plucking a rival’s best player bit. There’s no obvious place in the side for him though and can he ever replicate last season’s fine form? I can’t wait to find out.

Like TQ’s first album, they never saw this coming. Bobby Reid dazzled the Championship last year and most Cardiff fans could be forgiven for their admiring glances across the Severn at the fleet-footed midfielder. 20 goals last season meant that heads would have been turned but never did I envisage us making the move. £10m might seem a lot but it’s a gamble worth taking on a player who’s in the form of his life. Where will he play? Who knows. But he gives us something up top that we are currently missing and it’s already wound-up the Wurzels. Wonderful.

It will infuriate many Bristol City fans, which is a bonus but let’s not forget he had barely done anything until last season and he only had a year left on his contract. He’s an exciting player, and one I think would’ve earned a Premier League move in 12 months’ time. I would never have had him down as one of Warnock’s lads but the gaffer works in mysterious ways. Let’s face it, if the upcoming season is a disaster, Reid can tear up the Championship in 2019/20 and take us straight back up. I’m not convinced we’ll be playing the Wurzels though – they are starting to look like relegation fodder now.

This signing would not only cause our dearly beloved Bristolian friends to shout “not again” but would show that Cardiff City mean serious business in terms of building for the long-term.  Warnock is steadily building a squad of young, hungry players with an abundance of pace and and energy that will frighten most Premier League defences and give the bluebirds a fantastic platform if the worst does happen and they get relegated at the end of the season. Reid brings some youthful exuberance to a big forward line and could be the perfect accompaniment to Kenneth Zohore.  Wonderful news for me and yet another exciting addition to an exciting team.

I think this could be the signing of the summer. If a rumoured fee of £10 million is correct, we’ve pulled an absolute robbery on Bristol City. Reid was one of the standout performers in the Championship last year and will relish a shot at the big time. Gives a fantastic alternative to big Ken up front, while being able to play a little deeper, too. It winds the Wurzels up, too. Lovely.

Let’s just hope he turns out better than our last signing from Bristol City.

Who would have thought signing the Wurzels’ best player for a second consecutive year would be even funnier?

Reid, coming off his best season, is a brilliant acquisition. Will he play as a CAM? As a striker? Who cares, he can do it all and will work his hardest off the ball – the Warnockiest of Warnock traits.

Lee Tomlin at Reading was one of the key moments that sealed our return to the Premier League, despite being mostly a passing figure.

If Reid gets just one goal to keep us up, it would be £10m well spent. Honestly, it’s worth it already just for the earthquake it caused over the Severn.
